Sign 47 – Desolating Scourge of AIDS Begins

Year:1984

Scriptures:
Isaiah 28:15, 18
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
18 ¶ And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

D&C 5:19
19 For a desolating scourge shall go forth among the inhabitants of the earth, and shall continue to be poured out from time to time, if they repent not, until the earth is empty, and the inhabitants thereof are consumed away and utterly destroyed by the brightness of my coming.

D&C 45:31-32
31 And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land.
32 But my disciples shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; but among the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die.

D&C 97:22-25
22 For behold, and lo, vengeance cometh speedily upon the ungodly as the whirlwind; and who shall escape it?
23 The Lord's scourge shall pass over by night and by day, and the report thereof shall vex all people; yea, it shall not be stayed until the Lord come;
24 For the indignation of the Lord is kindled against their abominations and all their wicked works.
25 Nevertheless, Zion shall escape if she observe to do all things whatsoever I have commanded her.

In April Conference 1987 President Gordon B. Hinckley, First Counselor in the First Presidency, provided the following commentary on the plague of AIDS:
There is a plague of fearsome dimensions moving across the world. Public health officials are greatly concerned, and everyone else should be. . . .
AIDS is a commonly fatal malady caused primarily from sexually transmitted disease and secondarily from drug abuse. Unfortunately, as in any epidemic, innocent people also become victims.
We, with others, hope that discoveries will make possible both prevention and healing from this dread affliction. But regardless of such discoveries, the observance of one clearly understandable and divinely given rule would do more than all else to check this epidemic. That is chastity before marriage and total fidelity after marriage.
Prophets of God have repeatedly taught through the ages that practices of homosexual relations, fornication, and adultery are grievous sins. Sexual relations outside the bonds of marriage are forbidden by the Lord. We reaffirm those teachings. Mankind has been given agency to choose between right and wrong. . . .
Each of us has a choice between right and wrong. But with that choice there inevitably will follow consequences. Those who choose to violate the commandments of God put themselves at great spiritual and physical jeopardy.”

The desolating sickness of AIDS began to proliferate in 1984. A cure will not be found, but it will continue to grow and fill the world with its devastation. The Lord tells us it will not be stayed until the Second Coming.

Sign 46 - Radical Terrorism Begins

Year:1975

The book of Helaman begins in 52 BC (1974). In the first chapter we encounter terrorism for the first time among the Nephites and Lamanites. This new threat becomes the main theme of Satan’s efforts beginning in 53 BC (1975) and continuing for 71 years until 21 AD (2046) (3 Nephi 5:6). The Book of Mormon authors have included this pattern of terrorism as a warning for us in the latter days. The terrorists are called the Band of Kishkumen or Gadianton Robbers.

Helaman 1:9
9 Now when those people who were desirous that he should be their governor saw that he was condemned unto death, therefore they were angry, and behold, they sent forth one Kishkumen, even to the judgment-seat of Pahoran, and murdered Pahoran as he sat upon the judgment-seat.

The goal of these people is to gain power by robbing and murdering.

Helaman 2:8
8 … [I]t was the object of all those who belonged to his band to murder, and to rob, and to gain power, (and this was their secret plan, and their combination)….

Until this point the wars have been between the righteous and the wicked; Between the Nephites and their converts and the Lamanites and their followers. From Helaman chapter 1 until 3 Nephi chapter 6, Mormon tells us about a new threat which is terrorism caused by the Gadianton Robbers. Now the people must fight wars on two fronts. First the wickedness of the Lamanites and second the terrorism of the Gadianton Robbers. The Gadianton robbers have passwords and secret signs to identify them from the people who did not belong to the band. They make secret covenants with Satan to murder, plunder, steal, and commit all manner of iniquity.

There are currently 56 groups of modern day terrorists, who are comparable to the Gadianton robbers. They began practicing their terrorism in about 1975. In the Book of Mormon, they continue their terrorism for 71 years until they are finally defeated in a great and terrible battle. This is comparable to the battle of Armageddon.

On May 7, 1995 President Boyd K. Packer, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, spoke at a Church Educational System fireside on ‘the drama of all ages’. He said "It is in the name of freedom that terrorists now seek to destroy the institutions of society established to guarantee freedom. Read the first few verses of Helaman, chapter 12, and you will learn why terror will be visited upon mankind." (Pres. Packer Tells of 'drama of All Ages' , LDS Church News, 1995, 05/13/95)

Helaman 12:1-6
1 And thus we can behold how false, and also the unsteadiness of the hearts of the children of men; yea, we can see that the Lord in his great infinite goodness doth bless and prosper those who put their trust in him.
2 Yea, and we may see at the very time when he doth prosper his people, yea, in the increase of their fields, their flocks and their herds, and in gold, and in silver, and in all manner of precious things of every kind and art; sparing their lives, and delivering them out of the hands of their enemies; softening the hearts of their enemies that they should not declare wars against them; yea, and in fine, doing all things for the welfare and happiness of his people; yea, then is the time that they do harden their hearts, and do forget the Lord their God, and do trample under their feet the Holy One—yea, and this because of their ease, and their exceedingly great prosperity.
3 And thus we see that except the Lord doth chasten his people with many afflictions, yea, except he doth visit them with death and with terror, and with famine and with all manner of pestilence, they will not remember him.
4 O how foolish, and how vain, and how evil, and devilish, and how quick to do iniquity, and how slow to do good, are the children of men; yea, how quick to hearken unto the words of the evil one, and to set their hearts upon the vain things of the world!
5 Yea, how quick to be lifted up in pride; yea, how quick to boast, and do all manner of that which is iniquity; and how slow are they to remember the Lord their God, and to give ear unto his counsels, yea, how slow to walk in wisdom's paths!
6 Behold, they do not desire that the Lord their God, who hath created them, should rule and reign over them; notwithstanding his great goodness and his mercy towards them, they do set at naught his counsels, and they will not that he should be their guide.

Terrorism is happening in the last days to chastise the wicked because of their great iniquity and refusal to follow the counsel of the Lord. It is part of God’s plan which includes all manner of afflictions including warfare, death, famine, pestilence and natural calamities. Hopefully it will bring many to Christ through repentance. Otherwise, they will be destroyed with the wicked at the Second Coming.

Sign 45 - Perilous Times of Wickedness Begins

Year:1965

Scriptures:
2 Timothy 3:1-7
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

A great increase in the devils power over his own dominion occurred in the 1960’s. This was a transition period. This was a time when the wicked began to be more wicked, and the righteous began to be more righteous.
It is important to understand what the Sixties turmoil was about, for the youth culture that became manifest then is the modern liberal culture of today.” (Robert H. Bork, Slouching Towards Gomorrah, [New York City: Regan Books, 1996] 17)
This was the transition period which gave the devil power over his own dominion (D&C 1:35). President Joseph Fielding Smith said in 1967, “Peace has been taken from the earth. The devil has power over his own dominion. The Spirit of the Lord has been withdrawn. Not because the Lord desires to withdraw that Spirit, but because of the wickedness of mankind, it becomes necessary that the Spirit of the Lord be withdrawn." (The Predicted Judgments, BYU Speeches of the Year, March 21, 1967 6) During the 60’s there were numerous talks by general authorities in general conference concerning the rapidly increasing wickedness that was overtaking the world. We know that the transition period to wickedness was during the sixties, and that it had begun by 1967. 1965 as an approximate date for the beginning of the fulfillment of the prophecy that perilous times of wickedness would come in the last days.

The underlying causes of this transition to wickedness include the following:

Killing for convenience: abortion, assisted suicide, and euthanasia
Radical feminism’s assault on American culture
Affirmative action
Multiculturalism
Moral relativism
Political correctness

Sign 44 - Vietnam War

Year:1959

Alma 51 through Alma 63 describes the continuous war between the Nephites and the forces of righteousness and the Lamanites and the forces of evil. This covers a period of time from 67 BC (1959) through 53 BC (1973).

Alma 51:11-12
11 …. Amalickiah had gathered together a wonderfully great army, insomuch that he feared not to come down to the land of Zarahemla.
12 Yea, even Amalickiah did himself come down, at the head of the Lamanites. And it was in the twenty and fifth year of the reign of the judges….

War resumes in 67 BC (1959) between the Nephites and the Lamanites when Amalickiah prepares to attack the Nephite territory of Zarahemla.

Alma 51:23, 26
23 And it came to pass that the Nephites were not sufficiently strong in the city of Moroni; therefore Amalickiah did drive them, slaying many. And it came to pass that Amalickiah took possession of the city, yea, possession of all their fortifications.
26 And thus he went on, taking possession of many cities, the city of Nephihah, and the city of Lehi, and the city of Morianton, and the city of Omner, and the city of Gid, and the city of Mulek, all of which were on the east borders by the seashore.

The Lamanites capture many cities of the Nephites. In 1959 the Vietnam War began between North Vietnam, a communist country and South Vietnam who was opposed to communism.

Alma 52:19
19 And in the commencement of the twenty and eighth year, Moroni and Teancum and many of the chief captains held a council of war….

The leaders of the Nephites held a council of war in 64 BC (1961).
This is the year the United States entered the Vietnam War.

Alma 59:13
13 And it came to pass that Moroni was angry with the government, because of their indifference concerning the freedom of their country.

In 62 BC (1964) Moroni expresses anger with the government because of their lack of support for the war. During the Vietnam War the military leaders were unhappy with the government leaders because of their lack of support. Instead of letting the military leaders run the war, it was being run by politicians out of Washington DC.

Because of the lack of support by the government for the war, Moroni wrote a letter to Pahoran, the chief judge of the Nephites expressing his concern.

Alma 60:1-10
1 … I direct mine epistle to Pahoran, in the city of Zarahemla, who is the chief judge and the governor over the land, and also to all those who have been chosen by this people to govern and manage the affairs of this war.
2 For behold, I have somewhat to say unto them by the way of condemnation; for behold, ye yourselves know that ye have been appointed to gather together men, and arm them with swords, and with cimeters, and all manner of weapons of war of every kind, and send forth against the Lamanites, in whatsoever parts they should come into our land.
3 And now behold, I say unto you that …(our) men, have suffered exceedingly great sufferings; yea, even hunger, thirst, and fatigue, and all manner of afflictions of every kind.
4 But behold, were this all we had suffered we would not murmur nor complain.
5 But behold, great has been the slaughter among our people; yea, thousands have fallen by the sword, while it might have otherwise been if ye had rendered unto our armies sufficient strength and succor for them. Yea, great has been your neglect towards us.
6 And now behold, we desire to know the cause of this exceedingly great neglect; yea, we desire to know the cause of your thoughtless state.
7 Can you think to sit upon your thrones in a state of thoughtless stupor, while your enemies are spreading the work of death around you? Yea, while they are murdering thousands of your brethren—
8 Yea, even they who have looked up to you for protection, yea, have placed you in a situation that ye might have succored them, yea, ye might have sent armies unto them, to have strengthened them, and have saved thousands of them from falling by the sword.
9 But behold, this is not all—ye have withheld your provisions from them, insomuch that many have fought and bled out their lives because of their great desires which they had for the welfare of this people; yea, and this they have done when they were about to perish with hunger, because of your
exceedingly great neglect towards them.
10 And now…ye ought to have stirred yourselves more diligently for the welfare and the freedom of this people; but behold, ye have neglected them insomuch that the blood of thousands shall come upon your heads for vengeance; yea, for known unto God were all their cries, and all their sufferings—

Pahoran responded by letter to the concerns of Moroni.

Alma 61:2-4
2 I, Pahoran, who am the chief governor of this land, do send these words unto Moroni, the chief captain over the army. Behold, I say unto you, Moroni, that I do not joy in your great afflictions, yea, it grieves my soul.
3 But behold, there are those who do joy in your afflictions, yea, insomuch that they have risen up in rebellion against me, and also those of my people who are freemen, yea, and those who have risen up are exceedingly numerous.
4 And it is those who have sought to take away the judgment-seat from me that have been the cause of this great iniquity; for they have used great flattery, and they have led away the hearts of many people, which will be the cause of sore affliction among us; they have withheld our provisions, and have daunted our freemen that they have not come unto you.

The anti-war movement during the Vietnam War was a great divisive force which eventually caused the withdrawal of US troops in 1974 and the fall of Vietnam to the communists in 1975. There were numerous independent interests who were opposed to the war and fought vigorously against it.
in 1957 the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE) was formed. They were a traditional liberal activist group opposed to the development and use of nuclear weapons. The Student Peace Union (SPU) began in 1959 to be organized on college campuses throughout the US. They wanted to restructure the entire US society to bring “peace to the land” instead of “war”. In 1960 the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) was formed by college students opposed to the war. In 1964 the Free Speech Movement (FSM) was begun at the University of California at Berkeley. The young college students at many campuses began march-ins against many army bases and Government offices.
In 1965 25,000 students marched in protest at the capital in Washington. After this protest numerous protest groups were organized such as the Underground Press Syndicate and the Fort Hood 3 in 1966 and the Liberation News Service in 1967. Between 1965 and 1968 many civil rights leaders became active in opposing the Vietnam War. Beginning in 1968 widespread opposition began appearing in the government administration. A second protest march in Washington in 1969 drew 500,000 participants. The opposition began to grow until January 1973, when President Nixon announced the end of the US participation in the Vietnam War. Within a year all US troops were withdrawn and a year later South Vietnam fell to the communist rule of North Vietnam.

Sign 43 – The Beat Generation Emerges

Year:1959

Scriptures:

Alma 51:2-3, 5-7, 13
2 Nevertheless, they did not long maintain an entire peace in the land, for there began to be a contention among the people… for behold, there were a part of the people who desired that a few particular points of the law should be altered.
3 But behold, Pahoran would not alter nor suffer the law to be altered… therefore there arose a warm dispute concerning the matter, but not unto bloodshed.
5 …[They} were called Kingmen for they were desirous that the law should be altered….
6 And those who were desirous that Pahoran should remain chief judge over the land took upon them the name of freemen; and thus was the division among them, for the freemen had sworn or covenanted to maintain their rights and the privileges of their religion by a free government.
7 And it came to pass that this matter of their contention was settled by the voice of the people. And it came to pass that the voice of the people came in favor of the freemen….
13 And it came to pass that when the men who were called king-men had heard that the Lamanites were coming down to battle against them, they were glad in their hearts; and they refused to take up arms, for they were so wroth with the chief judge, and also with the people of liberty, that they would not take up arms to defend their country.

In 67 BC (1959) a contention arose among a group of people called king-men who wanted to change parts of the law. One of the things they were opposed to was their participation in war. They did not want to go into the military to defend their country.

In the late 1950’s the beatnik generation emerged. They wanted to live an unorthodox antiestablishment political and social lifestyle. Their goal was to seek the physical pleasures of life. They wanted to change the law to legalize the use of drugs and also do away with any moral laws regulating non-marital sexual relations. They also opposed serving in the military. The beatnik lifestyle of the late 1950’s evolved into the hippie and peacenik cults of the 1960’s. This brought on the “perilous times” of wickedness spoken of by Paul in 2 Timothy 3:1-7.

Sign 42 – A Pattern in All Things

Year:1955

Scriptures:

D&C 52:14
14 And again, I will give unto you a pattern in all things, that ye may not be deceived; for Satan is abroad in the land, and he goeth forth deceiving the nations—

The Lord uses particular words and presentations in His own way to teach us the things we must know in order to gain eternal life. He uses parables, allegories, symbols, metaphors and patterns among other techniques. There is a special purpose in the Lord’s patterns to help us be prepared for His second coming.

“ ‘l give you a pattern in all things’ is one of the Lord's greatest gifts and promises…. There are patterns for all worthy things if we will search for them. And behold, it must be done according to the pattern which I have given unto you (D&C 94:2). There is no other proven way.” (Marvin J. Ashton, The Measure of Our Hearts [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1991], 38)
When a pilot is flying to a particular destination he knows the approximate time that he will arrive. This is because he knows where he is now and the pattern he must follow to arrive at his destination. However, his time of arrival is only an estimate. There are many weather conditions that will effect his flight such as storms, turbulence, winds, numerous clouds and downdrafts. But he has a compass and precise flying instruments, experience and faith that he will arrive safely. The exact time of arrival is not known but the closer he approaches his destination, the better his estimate is to when he will arrive. He can’t control the elements or weather, but he can follow a proven pattern to assure his safe arrival at his destination.
We can similarly determine the season of the second coming by learning the pattern the Lord has given us in the scriptures. We also have the instrument of the Holy Ghost to give us daily direction. By observing the pattern, or signs of the times, listening to the guidance of the Spirit and exercising faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we can determine the season of His coming. The closer we get to that time, the more precise our estimate becomes. When a pilot flies over a known landmark, he knows where he is and can refine his estimate of when he will arrive. But still, the exact time of arrival is not known.

A Pattern Of His Second Coming In Scripture

“…in the Book of Mormon we find a pattern for preparing for the Second Coming. A major portion of the book centers on the few decades just prior to Christ's coming to America. By careful study of that time period we can determine why some were destroyed in the terrible judgments that preceded His coming and what brought others to stand at the temple in the land of Bountiful and thrust their hands into the wounds of His hands and feet.” (Ezra Taft Benson, The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1988], 59)
The Book of Mormon Another Witness of Jesus Christ is a book of scripture. It is 535 pages long and speaks extensively about Christ. In fact the Savior is mentioned every 1.6 verses throughout the book. “The Book of Mormon is a history book, but it is much more than that. Except for about seven pages, this book was written primarily by four men, and all four of those men saw our day, and they put things in that record which would help us become a multitude in our day…. Read the Book of Mormon with this question in mind: ‘Why did the writer put this particular thing in this record? Nephi, Jacob, Mormon and Moroni had voluminous records at their disposal. Why did they choose this particular thing?’ …go to the Book of Mormon and see whether or not the Book of Mormon gives guiding principles concerning these modern problems, concerning war, organized crime, sin, pride within and without the Church….” (Dr. Daniel H. Ludlow, November 12, 1963, BYU Speeches of the Year, 1963 6)
The resurrected Savior appeared to the people of ancient America in 34 AD (3 Nephi 11:1-10). Three hundred and nineteen pages or 60% of the Book covers a period of 165 years preceding this appearance. These selected events which lead up to the coming of the resurrected savior in ancient America gives us a pattern of similar events that will occur in the last days leading up to His second coming in glory. The record keepers wrote less than a hundredth part of the things that happened to the people (Words of Mormon:5). But that part that was written was selected especially for the people in the latter days. It gives us a pattern so we can understand the signs of the times and prepare ourselves for the second coming of Jesus Christ. If we are prepared His coming will not be as a thief in the night catching us unawares

The Time Of His Second Coming Is An Estimate

Mark 13:28-37
28 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:
29 So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.
30 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
32 ¶ But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
33 Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

No man knows the day or hour of the second coming. But just as we know that the summer is near when the fig tree puts forth its leaves, so we know the second coming of the Savior is near by watching the signs of the times.
We do not know the time of the second coming, but we have made an estimate of when that time will be. This estimate is based on observing the signs of the times as they occur, developing a model of the prophesied events, and determining a time-line sequence from the pattern given in the Book of Mormon. The accuracy of the estimate is determined by the accuracy of interpreting the signs of the times that are used in the model. Any errors or misinterpretations make the estimate less accurate. Also, time durations between events and their sequence are general which also affects the accuracy. But as we see the predicted signs fulfilled, we can refine the model and increase the accuracy of the prediction. So as time progresses and the signs occur, we become more and more confident that the second coming is near, even at our doors.
Let me reiterate that no man knows the day or hour of the second coming, but by watching the signs we can know the season thereof. The dated estimates of events given in this blog are only estimates. But as we refine these estimates with time, we can better determine the season of His coming and be prepared.

Time Sequence Of Events In The Book Of Mormon

We have in the Book of Mormon a superlative collection of stories, lessons, precepts, and warnings which, if pondered and studied, will help to prepare us as Latter-day Saints for perilous times that surely shall be. The decades preceding Christ's first coming may serve as a pattern or type of the years preceding his second coming. President Ezra Taft Benson has explained: ‘In the Book of Mormon we find a pattern for preparing for the Second Coming. A major portion of the book centers on the few decades just prior to Christ's coming to America. By careful study of that time period, we can determine why some were destroyed in the terrible judgments that preceded His coming and what brought others to stand at the temple in the land of Bountiful and thrust their hands into the wounds of His hands and feet. From the Book of Mormon we learn how disciples of Christ live in times of war. (A Witness and a Warning, pp. 20-21)’”(Joseph Fielding McConkie and Robert L. Millet, Doctrinal Commentary on the Book of Mormon, 4 vols. [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1987-1992], 3: 327)
The portion of the Book of Mormon record that immediately precedes the visit of the resurrected Lord to the Nephites (Hel. 10 through 3 Ne. 11) contains a number of historical events that prefigure, or typify, similar events that will occur when Jesus returns to the earth at his second coming. Elder Bruce R. McConkie explained: ‘It is no surprise to spiritually literate souls to learn that the prophecies of the First Coming are but types and shadows of similar revelations relative to the Second Coming.’ For example, wars and rumors of wars existed among the Nephites, and they also are among the signs of the times approaching the Second Coming (Hel. 11:1; 3 Ne. 3:4; D&C 45:26, D&C 45:68 68; 63:32). The willful rebellion of individuals that existed among the Nephites will be found again in the last days (3 Ne. 6:17-18; 7:7; D&C 64:34-36; 112:24). Famines and plagues existed among the Nephites and serve as signs of the times (Hel. 10:6; 12:3; D&C 43:25; 84:96; 87:6; 45:31). People rejected the Lord's prophets and will do so again (Ne. 6:23; 7:14; D&C 1:14; 133:71; 135:1; 136:35). The pride that existed in the church will be found again before Christ comes (3 Ne. 6:11-14; D&C 41:1; 50:2; 63:63; 98:19). Murders existed then, and they do so now (Hel. 10:18; 11:4; D&C 45:33, D&C 45:68 68; 63:33; 130:12).
Many other parallels exist between the period preceding Christ's appearance to the Nephites and the period preceding his second coming. These include the existence of secret combinations, (3 Ne. 6:25-30; 7:7; 9:9; Moro. 8:34-40; Ether 8:20-25; D&C 38:28; 42:64; 123:13) the persecution of the righteous, earthquakes and great disturbances, (3 Ne. 8:6-19; D&C 29:13; 43:18, 25; 45:26, 33, 48; 49:23; 88:88-89) and tempests, thunderings, and lightnings (Hel. 14:23, 26; 3 Ne. 8:5-6; 10:14; D&C 43:20-25; 87:6; 88:88).” (Donald W. Parry and Jay A. Parry, Understanding the Signs of the Times [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1999], 455)

The record keepers of the Book of Mormon kept very accurate records of the times when events occurred. You can easily trace the historical timeline from the time the prophet Lehi left Jerusalem in 600 BC until the resurrected Savior appeared to ancient America in 34 AD. In fact, the approximate time period for each page is given at the bottom of each page. This makes it easy to identify when events occurred.
If we can identify an event or events that occurred in the Book of Mormon and correlate it to events that have already occurred in these latter days, Then we can establish a baseline.

As I pondered Alma 50:23…there never was a happier time among the people of Nephi, since the days of Nephi, than in the day of Moroni, yea, even at this time…. I wondered what the happiest time was in my life. It was about 1955, the year I graduated from high school. Ten years earlier was not too happy a time as we were still involved in the Second World War. And ten years later in the sixties, everything was going down hill as the perilous times of wickedness began in the last days.
The happiest of times is a grand key in the Book of Mormon that correlates the patterns used to determine signs that will precede the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Imagine, compared to the previous 500 years, these were the happiest times the people of Nephi had ever experienced. And from that time until Jesus Christ appeared to them in 34 AD, they experienced great tragedy and calamity.

Alma 28:2
2 And thus there was a tremendous battle; yea, even such an one as never had been known among all the people in the land from the time Lehi left Jerusalem; yea, and tens of thousands of the Lamanites were slain and scattered abroad.

About 10 years before the happiest of times the Nephites and the Lamanites had the greatest battle ever since they left Jerusalem 500 years earlier. This corresponds to the Second World War which is the greatest battle that has occurred in the dispensation of the fullness of times.

Alma 51:2-5
2 Nevertheless, they did not long maintain an entire peace in the land, for there began to be a contention among the people concerning the chief judge Pahoran; for behold, there were a part of the people who desired that a few particular points of the law should be altered.
3 But behold, Pahoran would not alter nor suffer the law to be altered; therefore, he did not hearken to those who had sent in their voices with their petitions concerning the altering of the law.
4 Therefore, those who were desirous that the law should be altered were angry with him, and desired that he should no longer be chief judge over the land; therefore there arose a warm dispute concerning the matter, but not unto bloodshed.
5 And it came to pass that those who were desirous that Pahoran should be dethroned from the judgment-seat were called king-men, for they were desirous that the law should be altered in a manner to overthrow the free government and to establish a king over the land.

About 67 BC (1959) a contention arose over the form of government. Those who wanted it to change were called Kingmen. This began a great conflict between good and evil which began the perilous times of wickedness.

2 Timothy 3:1
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

The emergence of the Kingmen is a pattern in the Book of Mormon of the beginning of the perilous times of wickedness prophesied by Paul in the New Testament. A great increase in the devils power over his own dominion occurred in the 1960’s. This was a transition period. This was a time when the wicked began to be more wicked, and the righteous began to be more righteous.
The happiest of times of the Nephites and the happiest of times in these latter days are correlated events which give us a baseline of the events that will occur before the second coming. This is a grand key which helps significantly to understand the sequence and season that many of the signs of the times will occur.
The year that the happiest of times occurred to the Nephites (Alma 50:23) is recorded at the bottom of the scriptural page which was 71 BC which was 104 years before the Resurrected Savior came to ancient America. I wrote in my scriptures the corresponding year 1955 which is the happiest of times in these latter days. The first coming of Jesus Christ to the Nephites, as recorded in the Book of Mormon 3 Nephi 12:8 occurred in 34 AD. If we add 104 years to 1955 we get 2059 as the “estimated” time of the Second Coming. We have a baseline of what has already occurred and what will occur and we can fill in other signs of the times to fit this baseline.

Signs Of The Times

This blog is a summary of events (or 116 signs of the times) leading up to the second coming of Jesus Christ. It begins with the birth of Jesus Christ in 1 BC and concludes with his second coming in 2059 AD. In between these two events are 114 other events which have or will occur prior to the second coming. Sixty two events have already happened. Fifty four events have yet to happen.

How to correlate years between the Book of Mormon and the fullness of times.

To convert a BOM BC date to a Latter Day AD date: 2026 - (BOM) BC date = AD date
To convert a BOM AD date to a Latter Day AD date: 2025 + (BOM) AD date = AD date

Examples:

Omni 12 Mosiah1 made king in 206 BC
      2026 – 206 (BC) = 1820 AD

Alma 50:23 Nephite happiest times in 71 BC
      2026 - 71 (BC) = 1955 AD

3 Nephi 12:8 First coming of Christ to Nephites in 34 AD
      2025 + 34 (AD) = 2059 AD

Sign 41 – Two Communist Spies Put to Death

Year:1953

Scriptures:

Alma 46:35
5 And it came to pass that whomsoever of the Amalickiahites that would not enter into a covenant to support the cause of freedom, that they might maintain a free government, he caused to be put to death; and there were but few who denied the covenant of freedom.

In 73 BC (1953) there were some of the followers of Satan’s doctrine that would not support a free nation and a free government. There were a few who, because of their actions were put to death.

In 1953, two Communists spies, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg who were living in the United States were put to death.

Sign 40 – Warned Against Evils of Communism

Year:1953

Alma 43 through Alma 63 is called the war chapters (Alma 43:3) in the Book of Mormon. This covers a period of time from 74 BC (1952) (Alma 43:3) through 53 BC (1973) (Alma 63:10). The missionary effort of the church after the Second World War was countered by Satan’s effort to spread communism throughout the land. This conflict between good and evil is typified by the cold war between Russia who was spreading communism and the United States of America who was spreading freedom. It is also typified by the hot wars which were fought during this time by the same forces of good and evil such as the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Alma 45:23-24
23 And now it came to pass that after Helaman and his brethren had appointed priests and teachers over the churches that there arose a dissension among them, and they would not give heed to the words of Helaman and his brethren;
24 But they grew proud, being lifted up in their hearts, because of their exceedingly great riches; therefore they grew rich in their own eyes, and would not give heed to their words, to walk uprightly before God.

The missionary effort brought many people into the church. But there began to be dissensions among them and they would not obey God’s commandments. Many also became rich which caused them to become proud. In this background of general unrest, one of Satan’s Nephite followers sought for power.

Alma 46:3-4
3 Now the leader of those who were wroth against their brethren was a large and a strong man; and his name was Amalickiah.
4 And Amalickiah was desirous to be a king; and those people who were wroth were also desirous that he should be their king; and they were the greater part of them the lower judges of the land, and they were seeking for power.

Amalickiah taught the doctrine of Satan in opposition to the doctrine of Christ which was taught by the missionaries.

Alma 46:7-10
7 And there were many in the church who believed in the flattering words of Amalickiah, therefore they dissented even from the church; and thus were the affairs of the people of Nephi exceedingly precarious and dangerous, notwithstanding their great victory which they had had over the Lamanites, and their great rejoicings which they had had because of their deliverance by the hand of the Lord.
8 Thus we see how quick the children of men do forget the Lord their God, yea, how quick to do iniquity, and to be led away by the evil one.
9 Yea, and we also see the great wickedness one very wicked man can cause to take place among the children of men.
10 Yea, we see that Amalickiah, because he was a man of cunning device and a man of many flattering words, that he led away the hearts of many people to do wickedly; yea, and to seek to destroy the church of God, and to destroy the foundation of liberty which God had granted unto them, or which blessing God had sent upon the face of the land for the righteous' sake.

The purpose of Amalickiah teaching this satanic doctrine was to destroy the church and the foundation of Liberty. However, Moroni a righteous man warned the people of this wickedness.

Alma 46:11-13
11 And now it came to pass that when Moroni, who was the chief commander of the armies of the Nephites, had heard of these dissensions, he was angry with Amalickiah.
12 And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole.
13 And he fastened on his head-plate, and his breastplate, and his shields, and girded on his armor about his loins; and he took the pole, which had on the end thereof his rent coat, (and he called it the title of liberty) and he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as there should a band of Christians remain to possess the land—

Moroni’s warning went throughout the whole land. Satan’s plan is to destroy our agency which causes the world to lose their freedom and become wicked. God’s plan, which was defended by Moroni, maintains our agency which gives us the blessings of liberty and freedom which are necessary to become a righteous people.

This pattern of events given in Alma is similar to what has happened in the latter days. The whole world was involved in the Second World War from 1939 until 1945 which was a conflict between good and evil. Before this war, Russia was the only Communist country in the world. After the war, the missionary effort of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expanded, teaching the doctrines of Christ to the world. At the same time, Satan’s followers began to spread in a cold war and eventually hot wars, a doctrine of the devil known as Communism. In 2009 there were 5 countries that were ruled by Communists. However, before the fall of the Iron Curtain there were 47 countries that were ruled or under the control of Communism.
In the 1950’s there were many efforts to warn the United States of the evils of Communism. During this time Ezra Taft Benson gave many talks and wrote several books warning of this threat to our freedom. From 1950 to 1954 Senator Joseph McCarthy held congressional hearings exposing Communist members and sympathizers within the U.S. government. In 1958 Cleon Skousen, a member of the church wrote the book “The Naked Communist” which exposed the operations and long term goals of communism. Also in 1958 the John Birch Society was formed. The purpose of this organization is to insure our personal freedom and determine the proper role of government. They warned the world how Communism fights against both of these goals.
